One Faithful Day at a Time
John, a retired pastor, stays active physically and spiritually at the Y.
"We have prayer in here quite often, and that’s good. That’s what this organization is about."
He spends his time building friendships with staff and members, riding the bike, and lifting weights.
"I just keep going day after day, week after week, month after month. If it wasn’t for this, I’d probably be a couch potato."
Tell us, John, even though you have some joint pain, do you feel better when you come exercise?
"Oh yeah, absolutely. I’m slacking off because my wife had health issues, but she’s gotten to where she can walk a mile and ride the bike a little bit."
Sounds like you both have been on quite a journey.
"We’re just two old folks. We’ve been married so long, we don’t remember not being married—almost 66 years."
That’s amazing.
"Why?"
It’s hard to fathom.
"It’s just one day at a time. She’s 85, and I’m 84. We just keep plugging along. We don’t do very much now. This place has sort of become my ministry. I talk to a lot of people here."
Taking an interest in people truly matters. How long were you a pastor?
"I retired on my 50th anniversary."
Thank you for your faithfulness to the community and our members, John!
