One of the Regulars
Betty says the regular morning exercisers at her Y are a tight-knit group.
Betty: We chat, and we drink coffee together. It feels very familiar, and it’s easy to keep one another motivated.
And when someone doesn’t show up, they notice.
Betty: If you’re not here, we’ll call and see why you’re not here.
She chatted with us while waiting for her husband to finish working out.
Betty: He was a runner in his forties. Then the doctor told him his knees were beginning to give out, and if he wanted to keep exercising forever, he should go to walking. And he’s done it religiously. He’s a very disciplined person.
Betty’s a regular exerciser too.
Betty: Usually I will do a little of this and that and do my hour’s walk. But we are cutting back right now until he gets to feeling better.
A recent illness changed the intensity of the couple’s workouts, but not their daily routine.
Betty: The first thing in the morning, it’s just one of the things we do [she laughs]—we wake up and we go and do our exercise.
