DeQuan Bond, 24, is well-known on the Christ Church YMCA basketball court. He plays pickup three days per week—a fitting activity for a high school basketball coach.
DeQuan, who goes by "Quan," says he and the other players are a tight-knit group.
“Most of the guys have been coming here since I’ve been coming here," says Quan. "We have a tight bond. Some of them I went to high school with.”
The Cane Ridge graduate is friends with everyone, even the more seasoned players. He jokes: “Some of them are older men, who shouldn’t be playing anymore, but they still come to watch.”
When he isn’t playing in the gym, you'll spot him in a Christ Church YMCA group exercise class. Quan is well-versed in group exercise. He takes GRIT, BODYPUMP, SPRINT, CXWORX and even yoga! For him, it’s not the class, but rather the instructor that matters most.
Quan swears he doesn’t play favorites, but he’s a mainstay in Wynedka’s class. Wink, wink!
Ties to the Y
Quan’s ties to the YMCA go back to his childhood.
“When I was a kid, I went to Fun Company," he recalls. "(The Y) helped my mom with that. We weren’t financially able to put me in a summer camp. That is something I did a lot of the summers when I was younger."
He kept his membership as an adult and sees the Christ Church Y as so much more than a place to stay fit.
“I feel like it’s a family here," says Quan. "I know all the staff. I’ve been coming for so long and I know a lot of the members. I love the togetherness of it.”
Catch the guys on the court on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
