Pilates
What is Pilates?
Pilates, pronounced Puh-Lah-Tees, is an exercise method named after its founder, Joseph H. Pilates.
Since the 1920s, Pilates has been helping people make the mind-body connection with exercises promoting flexibility and strength. This method focuses on the abdominals, lower back and gluteals to create a balanced, firm and supple body without bulk.
Who can do Pilates?
Pilates at the Green Hills Family YMCA is for members only. Pilates exercises are personalized to fit each individual's needs. Even if you have suffered from injuries or problems in the past, the gentle, rehabilitative exercises can be adapted to fit your body. Pilates is safe and gentle enough for people with lower back problems and strained or injured muscles.
How do I get started?
Pilates at the Green Hills Family YMCA consists of mat classes for up to 8 people, private sessions, or duets. See the Pilates Room or Membership Services Desk for class times and prices. Classes last 50 minutes and are purchased in a package of 10.
You will be most comfortable wearing a T-shirt and tights, sweat pants or spandex shorts.
When you come to your first class, please pay at the Membership Services Desk before the class. Be sure to get a receipt and bring it to your instructor when you attend class.

Mat Classes
If you are new to Pilates and would like to take mat classes, you must take two introductory classes before attending a beginner class.
Members may sign up at the Pilates Room for mat classes on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are not able to come by the Pilates Room, you may leave a message on 586-0101 to reserve a spot (in the Intro classes only).
Private & Duet Sessions
All private and duet sessions require an appointment. To schedule a private or duet session, please leave a message at (615) 586-0101 specifying the day(s), approximate times and instructor you'd like. An instructor will return your call and schedule an appointment. All appointments must be made with an instructor. The Green Hills Family YMCA Membership Services Desk does not take appointments or cancellations.
Our Instructors
Pilates instructors at the Green Hills Family YMCA are members of the Pilates Guild and have completed an intensive, year long training regimen, including 600 hours of apprenticeship and continuing education seminars annually. While other facilities offer similar techniques, we are proud to offer you authentic Pilates instruction and equipment.
Is Pilates a Cardiovascular Workout?
Pilates develops slender muscles and core strength rather than bulk. Many Pilates clients lose inches around their mid-section and hips. Once you are skilled in the Pilates method, you can perform the strengthening workout at a pace that satisfies aerobic needs.
Canceling an Appointment Cancellations for all classes and sessions MUST be made 24 hours in advance to avoid being charged. If you are late to a private and duet session, you will be charged for the entire session and granted the time remaining.
YOU MAY NOT BEGIN PILATES WHILE PREGNANT.
The race, set for September 20th, will begin and end at the Green Hills YMCA with all proceeds benefitting our We Build People fund, which helps keep the Y available for all.
