WELLNESS AT THE YMCA OF MIDDLE TENNESSEE

The YMCA movement and its commitment to health and wellness is so strong, it even created the sports of basketball and volleyball, as well as YMCA methods for swim instruction that have become the standard in teaching people how to swim. However, fitness is just one part of a larger whole, not a separate activity of the YMCA's other programs and services. The YMCA has never focused on the body alone, because for over a century the Y has recognized that a person achieves total health when his/her spirit, mind and body are balanced.

Wellness Coach
The Wellness Coach is your personal way to get connected and plugged into what the YMCA has to offer.  When you join as a new member or anytime during your membership you can choose to meet wtih a wellness coach by asking the welcome desk.  You can choose to do a fitness evaluation or an equipment orientation both of which are FREE to members.  The FITNESS EVALUATION is an evaluation of your current fitness level which compares you to others your age across the country. Members (18 years and older) receive a computerized printout with the results from each component of the assessment. The fitness evaluation includes height, weight, resting heart rate, blood pressure, body composition analysis using skin fold calipers, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and flexibility. A fitness evaluation provides a great baseline of knowledge in developing your exercise goals and objectives. It is also a great motivational tool. Please wear loose fitting clothes such as a T-shirt and shorts (no spandex). Women should wear a sports bra under their shirt. If you just want to get right into starting your healthy life change then the wellness coach can take you through an EQUIPMENT ORIENTATION.  Based upon your individual goals, the wellness coach will acclimate you to different cardiovascular and strength training machines. They will also demonstrate proper form, body alignment, pace and suggested repetitions. Two to three weeks later an additional appointment should be made to check your form and to answer any questions you might have about your program. Both appointments compliment each other to ensure you are satisfied with the program and you are having positive progress.

The coaches also handle the youth strength training program.  This program is designed for any youth ages 10-13 that would like to start working out on the wellness floor.  It is a two hour class that will help your child to understand the basics of fitness and nutrition while understanding how to properly work the cardio and machine weights.

The 1st Steps program is another one of the Wellness Coaches' responsibilities.  This program is designed for anyone that is new to working out or has not been involved with working out for a considerable amount of time.  This is a 10 week program where the member is guided through a basic workout regiment and is encouraged and motivated by the coaches on a weekly basis.  The purposeof this program is to be able to intergrate the member into a program but still having the wellness coach available to answer any questions or concerns along the way.  The program is FREE to members.

YOUTH ACTIVITY CENTER
The Franklin Family YMCA now offers a workout room for youth members ages 6-13. This comprehensive exercise room is equipped with Hoist strength training equipment and is fully staffed. The hours of the youth activity center are Monday-Thursday 4:00-7:30 pm, Friday 4:00-7:00 pm, Saturday 9:00-2:00 pm, and closed on Sunday.  More information can be obtained through our welcome center.

PERSONAL TRAINING
Personal training can make a difference in the success of your program. Our trainers can work with you regularly or on a consulting basis to help design a workout that is uniquely yours. Trainers encourage you to exercise and reach your goals. Trainers are YMCA, CPR, an NSCA or ACSM certified. Trainers must be employed by the YMCA. Members may not provide their own trainers. Stop by the Welcome Center for more details.

New! KINESIS

Kinesis is an innovative new wellness area at the Franklin Family YMCA that focuses on movement through balance, flexibility and strength. It is not a machine; it is an experience.

The Kinesis wall is constructed of four panels with cables, grips, and weight stacks that allow movements to be easy, natural and without restrictions. Patent-pending technology permits the user to keep resistance in three-dimensional movements. In all, Kinesis offers more than 500 different exercises and movements to improve strength, flexibility, and balance.

Users of all ability levels and backgrounds can receive positive benefits with Kinesis. Those looking to burn more calories while toning up will find that functional training on Kinesis recruits more muscle groups than traditional strength training, and the result is a 30% higher caloric expenditure. Kinesis helps to train and restore balance with movements that simulate everyday activities, making it a useful tool for rehab patients, active older adults and anyone looking to strengthen the connection between mind and body. Athletes find that Kinesis programs can be designed to mimic their sport to help maximize performance.

Kinesis is a small group training tool. Classes of four to six members move freely in a friendly atmosphere where exploring movement is the ultimate goal.
