Wellness
The YMCA movement and its commitment to health and wellness is so strong, it even created the sports of basketball and volleyball, as well as YMCA methods for swim instruction that have become the standard in teaching people how to swim. However, fitness is just one part of a larger whole, not a separate activity of the YMCA's other programs and services. The YMCA has never focused on the body alone, because for over a century the Y has recognized that a person achieves total health when his/her spirit, mind and body are balanced. Wellness Consultation
Are you new to the YMCA or just not sure where to get started? This 30-minute consultation will allow you to discuss your fitness goals with one of our Wellness Specialists to find out which YMCA programs are best for you. After the consultation you will be given the opportunity to try some of our most popular fee-based classes, a Microfit fitness evaluation and a free personal training session. By appointment ONLY. Contact Doug Webb at dwebb@ymcamidtn.org.
Microfit® Fitness Evaluation
This evaluation of your current fitness level compares you to others your age across the country. Members receive a computerized printout with the results from each component of the assessment. The fitness evaluation includes height, weight, resting heart rate, blood pressure, body composition analysis using skin fold calipers, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and flexibility. A fitness evaluation provides a great baseline of knowledge in developing your exercise goals and objectives. It is also a great motivational tool. Please wear loose fitting clothes such as a T-shirt and shorts (no spandex). Women should wear a sports bra under their shirt. You may contact the Welcome Center to set up an appointment.
DietMaster Nutrition Consultation
This 30-minute session is scheduled with a personal trainer who can help you analyze your current eating habits and help make changes by giving you a personalized nutrition plan. This nutrition plan is for your individual body type and will help maximize your weight loss. Contact Doug Webb at dwebb@ymcamidtn.org for more information.
Equipment Orientations
A staff member will acclimate you to different cardiovascular and strength training machines. The staff member will also demonstrate proper form, body alignment, pace and suggested repetitions. Call the Welcome Center for available times.
Fit Kid Youth Circuit Training
The focus of this program is to provide our youth and teens with correct, safe and effective weight training principles. A staff member will lead and supervise all sessions. A monthly class meets 8 times and each session is 60 minutes in length. $50. Ages 7-13. Contact Barbara Johnson at bjohnson@ymcamidtn.org for more information.
First Step Fitness
First Step Fitness is a beginner exercise program designed for anyone starting exercise for the first time or for those just returning to exercise after a long hiatus from being active. First Step provides coaching, accountability and motivation from a First Step coach and is designed to create a lifestyle of health and wellness.
Participants of the First Step Fitness program will not only receive guidance and encouragement from a coach but will also be empowered to exercise on their own in order to establish exercise as a habit and as part of their daily lifestyle. This group meets once a week for four weeks. Contact Doug Webb at dwebb@ymcamidtn.org for more information.
Boot Camp
Boot Camp is an intensive, results-oriented conditioning program that runs three days a week. Each class session is four weeks in duration. The program is conducted in an indoor and outdoor environment utilizing the world's greatest gym - your body! A boot camp workout works to develop functional conditioning. Each session trains the entire body head to toe with bodyweight calisthenics, cardiovascular and strength-endurance activities. Class times are 6 a.m. and 9:15 am M/W/F. Cost is $100 per month. Contact Doug Webb at dwebb@ymcamidtn.org to set up a free trial session.
Small Group Personal Training (SGPT) ***LESS THAN $20/SESSION***
SGPT is an economical alternative to one-on-one training. It also gives you the opportunity to train with a friend or make some new ones. Groups of four participants are placed with one trainer who will lead you through cardiovascular and strength training programs. Each group meets twice a week for four weeks and each session lasts 60 minutes. You can either bring your own group or we'll help you put one together (3 person minimum per group). Cost is $155 for four weeks. Please contact Doug Webb at dwebb@ymcamidtn.org for more information and scheduling.
Personal Training
Having trouble getting started? Are fitness machines confusing, intimidating? When should I use weights versus machines? Do I need to do both cardio exercise and lift weights? How many repetitions should I do?
All of these questions and more can be addressed by YMCA certified personal trainers. They will assess your fitness condition including cardio, strength, endurance, and flexibility. In so doing, they will develop a customized, safe, and effective personal fitness process aligned with your specific fitness goals! Additionally, they will facilitate and monitor every step of your fitness process so that continuous improvements and positive results are achieved.
The probability of reaching your fitness goals will be increased dramatically when a certified personal trainer is used to get started. They can also be used to review your fitness process on a periodic basis when appropriate.
Trainers must be employed by the YMCA. Members may not provide their own trainers. Contact Doug Webb at dwebb@ymcamidtn.org for more information.
