WHAT WE STAND FOR
HEALTHY LIVING
Improving Health

At the Y, we believe a community is strongest when everyone has the opportunity to live healthier in all areas of life—spirit, mind and body. That's why we're committed to providing access to the facilities, people and resources to improve our community's health and well-being.

KEY HEALTHY LIVING OBJECTIVES

Over the next several years, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee is working to improve our community's health through the following key initiatives

Improving adult health

We've set a goal to help one out of every 10 adults in our community to improve their health by 2015. Steps we're taking to help us achieve this ambitious milestone include:

  • Developing a health evaluation protocol to help current Y member assess their personal health, set goals and make healthy decisions
  • Partnering with area health providers to help improve health outcomes through both our traditional wellness services and new services such as physical therapy, rehabilitation and nutrition education
  • Expanding the reach of Restore Ministries, which provides vital spiritual and personal development services to people seeking to make healthier lifestyle choices

Reverse youth obesity trends

The Y is working to address our community's youth obesity crisis on several fronts, including:
  • Expanding the amount of youth and family wellness programs and services, including an expansion of our youth diabetes prevention program
  • Through our leadership on the Tennessee Youth Obesity Task Force and similar groups, we are advocating for and implementing policies to make it easier for families to make healthy choices
  • Implementing a new 5-2-1-0 (five fruits and vegetables, two hours or less of "screen time," at least one hour of physical activity and zero sugary drinks) social marketing campaign to encourage kids to make healthy choices and be active every day.

Expanding our reach

To help improve the health of individuals and families who may not come into our facilities, the Y is actively exploring ways to provide health and well-being services in non-traditional settings. In addition, we're undergoing a detailed analysis of our facilities—from interior design to scheduling to possible expansion needs--to see how they can be better used to improve health.
